While enjoying the accompanying images of Norma Shearer and her beloved
husband
Irving G. Thalberg, keep in mind the untold complexities of their
love. You see, thanks to their discretion in all matters personal, we may
never fully know the facts about their marriage; to followers of Norma's
career, it has always seemed much like a professional relationship. Be
that as it may, they nourished one another for the 9 years their marriage
lasted until his untimely passing. And, as we all know, they never really
parted...

Norma
Shearer was among the actresses who forged the new acting technique required
of sound film, but by 1936 some complained that her style was beginning to
date. Although it was a great critical and popular success,
Romeo and Juliet also found Shearer showing her age; it was time for her
to graduate to more mature roles. But in 1936 the film industry was shocked
by Thalberg's sudden death--and in addition to his loss, MGM also feared the
loss of Shearer; many felt her career was due more to Thalberg's promotions
than her own gifts. Shearer shocked many by immediately plunging into work
and silenced her naysayers with one of the most memorable roles of her
career: the lavish
Marie Antoinette.
