A. Vieira, no stranger to film lore-- his photographic studio is housed in
George Hurrell's building!-- has produced a number of books dedicated to
the glorious art of studio photography, and this volume is a favorite.
EVERYONE is in here, beautiful and glowing and preserved for posterity.
This book appears to be a greatly expanded version of Hollywood
Portraits 1929-1941 and Hollywood Portraits 1939-1951
(which see), featuring more reproductions and commentary. For example, the
section of The Women has been lovingly enlarged and annotated.
NORMA WATCH:
Use "Vieira" or "Hurrell" in a conversation,
and "Norma Shearer" is sure to follow... if she hasn't already
been mentioned! Lush and expansive swatches of Norma's portraits are
featured in this book, all kindly and fairly noted.
FROM THE BOOK:
Accompanying a set still of Norma and Joan... "By the end of
production, when Laszlo Willinger made this portrait, the two stars were
not speaking... The 15-year-old rivalry had erupted into a feud, rendered
pointless because the ground they were fighting over was already slipping
from beneath their feet; 1940 was just around the corner, and with it
would come the Twilight of the Goddesses..." |
