A
beautiful, lavishly-illustrated book detailing the work of photographer
George Hurrell's Hollywood career... one of five that Mark Vieira has
produced. (Which see.) Much informative text, but the photographs
speak for themselves. Here is the fascinating story of his
"debut," thanks to Ramon Novarro's romantic and evocative
sessions... which led to Norma Shearer's request that George photograph
her in a new way, which led to her Academy Award-winning role in
Thalberg's The Divorcee... and beyond, as George managed to
practically photograph "more stars than there are in Heaven."
His career is dutifully recorded. This book is a pleasure for the devoted
Hollywood fan to indulge in, and a great introduction for those just
starting out.
NORMA WATCH:
Many, many pictures of Norma Shearer, including the fabulous
full-page shot on page 52.
FROM THE BOOK:
[When
George began to play 'When My Baby Smiles At Me,' in order to get himself
into a working mood, Norma] stiffened and questioned Hurrell's choice of
music. (She was accustomed to having three musicians on the set to play
mood music for her.) Wasn't this a rather silly song? "She didn't
like it. I explained I needed it." This was good psychology,
since this regal young woman was slightly ill at ease in his bohemian
outpost, miles away from protective Metro, about to pose for the sort of
photo that only hungry starlets did." |
