Lambert's
biography is a thorough and satisfying read, and includes much detail that
Quirk's bio leaves out. Lambert is a very good writer, and presents an
intelligent and well-researched biography. We get an excellent picture of
MGM during the time of Mayer and Thalberg's tenure, and a vibrant vision
of stardom as lived by the reigning queen of MGM.
FROM THE BOOK:
Culver
City 1973... at a private screening of Idiot's Delight at MGM: Norma,
Marti, and Gavin Lambert.
Norma got out of the car and for a moment seemed uncertain where she
was...
"I made three pictures with Clark Gable," she told me. "Idiot's
Delight was the last." Then she sighed. "But I never worked
with Spencer Tracy or James Stewart, although they were under contract
here too." Now she knew exactly where she was, and her voice sounded
firm and clear. "That's one of my deepest regrets. Jimmy Stewart
especially..." And she gave a long blue stare at the past.
