"Joan Crawford was a fascinating star who knew what it was to 'owe' her
fans. Writing some 5,000 letters per month, my upcoming book is about her
somewhat obsessive letter writing and love for her fans. Marilyn, recently
posted a story about the time her grandmother met Joan on the street and was
invited to dinner with her. What a great fan story for the book? Marilyn,
please write me and I'll see if I can incorporate your grandmother's story
into the book for all to read. mvozus@aol.com"

the queen of divas."

"It is unfortunate that Christina's book has made many lose sight of
Joan's career and the good things she did. Joan Crawford didn't only give to
people who worshipped her she gave to many because she truly cared. A friend
of mine had a friend who worked at Pepsi while she was running it and said she
was truly generous, remembering birthdays and when mothers had babies and
anniversaries, and to not only the upper staff but those not high up in the
company. Joan you are gone from us but not forgotten... viva la diva Joan!"

Ken
(USA) on Joan Crawford
"... because she was a mean bitch & an awesome movie star."
Shayne
(USA) on Joan Crawford
"A million reasons! Because she was everything a movie star should be.
Because of her devotion to her fans. Because she was the ultimate CLASSY
bitch! And because of the following, what George Cukor said about Joan at her
memorial service: "She was the perfect image of the movie star, and as
such she largely the creation of her own indomitable will. She had of course
very remarkable material to work with; a quick native intelligence, tremendous
animal vitality, a lovely figure, and above all her face that extraordinary
sculptural construction of lines and planes. It caught the lights superbly so
that you could photograph her from any angle. The nearer the camera the more
tender and yielding she became. Her eyes glistening, her lips avid and
ecstatic. The camera saw I suspect a side of her that no flesh and blood lover
ever saw."
Jalo
(Finland) on Joan Crawford
"Strong independent lady, the only movie STAR in this world."
Gustavo
(USA) on Joan Crawford
"Joan Crawford had courage and tenacity and knew the obligations and joys

Eddie
(USA) on Joan Crawford
"She is *the* bitch."
Shane
(USA) on Joan Crawford
"... because she epitomizes the word Movie Star."
Victoria
(USA) on Joan Crawford
"... because she did it all. Not always the best of all, but she
had a unique feline tenaciousness in her work and life, that made her a diva.
Also, watch her silents. I really believe the silents and early sound
work of this actress reveal much more dimension. She became a stereotype
of the characters she created in the end, but even then, in true diva form,
she capitalized on it. She was unsinkable. She did everything well and
some things especially well. Watch her silents and early sound films.
She was so lovely and more agile as an actress. She did some really
serious work. And talk about a great face. When Joan is on the screen,
even when she was aged, you didn't see anyone else. She came from the
gutter and clawed her way to the top. Now if that isn't diva-hood, in
this sense, what is? But don't forget, she left the world a wonderful
legacy of her struggle."
Michael
(USA) on Joan Crawford
"I loved her attitude towards things. She didn't give a damn."

eye and ear over the years as Miss Crawford has. No matter what anybody writes
about her she is and will be a remarkable actress and woman forever."

"... because she's the queen and she is the greatest star that ever lived
and a great actress!"

Allen
(USA) on Joan Crawford
"No spoken word for such greatness!"
Ava
(USA) on Joan Crawford
"She frightens the crap out of me... and I like it!"
David
(UK) on Joan Crawford
"Joan was a wonderful and devoted mother, whose Diva status never once
detracted from the fact that she wore them two little bastards like a string
of fabulous live pearls. If my mother were the Divine Choahn Crawh-fuhd, I
would never complain. Choahn, you are the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning
and the End."
Luis
(USA) on Joan Crawford
"Love her, she was cool, great actor, beautiful woman, sophisticated, and
when older funny. Sad that she died alone and was drinking so much. But she is
one of the divas who doesn't get much remembered because of her Christina
darling. People should put what she was to them first... a hell of an actress
and a great one."

her daughter told."

talent."
J.S.
(USA) on Joan Crawford

period. She had a hard beginning, and was not at the beginning of her career a
good actress. She worked hard to improve herself throughout her life and
deserves a lot of credit. She is one of my role models and is constant

Marilyn
(USA) on Joan Crawford
"She is by far the most enduring female diva due to her survival skills
and sheer cunning. Also, my grandmother ran after her once in N.Y. and was
shocked when Miss Crawford invited her to dinner and spent more than 2 hours with
a complete stranger. She told my grandmama that she was repaying a debt to her
for seeing every movie she had done. That was sometime in the mid 30s and
before Joan could of been considered old or lonely or washed up. Never was I
so moved by one of my grandmama's stories. We still have a great pic of Joan
and my grandmama in N.Y. Both young vibrant and every bit divas as anyone
before or since."

"Joan Crawford was a true diva. She came from the most humble beginnings
to become one of the biggest stars to ever cross the silver screen. She used
her stardom and popularity to help various charitable organizations throughout
her lifetime and tried to really give back some of what she had been most
fortunate to secure in her lifetime. She's truly one of (if not the greatest
diva) of her time."
Elizabeth
(USA) on Joan Crawford
"I met her in the 1920's. Joan was in her first years in Hollywood. My
father and I ran a snack bar concession down below the country club on Santa
Monica Beach. Even then, she was making a name for herself in pictures and we
knew exactly who we were serving. She wore "short" stylish beach
dresses over her suit, and she was covered head to foot with millions of
freckles! She was always friendly and chatty with us; never stuck-up. She
ordered the same snack every time: a hot dog with nothing on it except loads
and loads of mustard, more mustard than it seemed possible to eat and still
taste the rest of the sandwich! It made my mouth pucker even though I was just
a little girl and loved mustard, too. Later on, I came to love Joan for her
style, relentless courage and her captivating portrayals of strong and
fascinating characters on the screen. But, I will never forget the warm,
friendly girl with the beautiful laugh, who didn't wear makeup, running up to
us, all covered with water and freckles and sand just "dying"
for a hot dog, and making me and my Dad feel like we were the best cooks in
California! This was Joan, too. Thanks to my nephew for typing this in
dedication to the memory of Miss Joan Crawford."
Cheryl
(USA) on Joan Crawford
"She had great acting abilities, and could play any part!"
Dan
(USA) on Joan Crawford
"Joan Crawford personified the actress of the 30's and 40's. Though she

her any day. She the lips, and the eyebrows, the shoulder pads and most

"Hello? The Letty Lynton dress, the quotable quotes and the huge
shoulder pads. Duh!" Niamh
(Australia) on Joan Crawford
"The first thing that strikes me about Joan Crawford is her exquisite
beauty accompanied by her unfinished regal style. She is a standard bearing
for everything that is elegant and sophisticated, something to which all women
can aspire. She remained the quintessential star her whole life long and never
allowed her front to slip. She demanded the best because she knew only the
best was worthy of her. She also possessed a shrewd character who fully
understood the importance and power of the right photo, the most
favourable contract and a loyal fan base, all before the onset of the PR
machine that exists today. Ultimately she is a class act and her aura is
merely perpetuated not diminished by her daughter's accusations after her
death, proving even from the grave, Joan will always be a winner." N.N.
(USA) on Joan Crawford

(USA) on Joan Crawford
"Joan Crawford may not be the woman my mother or father want me to
idolize, but I do. She is beautiful, one of the most glamorous women to ever
be in Hollywood, and she was a great actress. Of all the movies I have seen
with her in them, I always think she was the best person in the picture. Her
voice was so smooth and sexy, her body so slim with the perfect curves. Her
face eloquently chiseled, her eyes big and so alive! Her lips and her eyebrows
where one of her most amazing facial features. Her lips seem to show off her
perfect teeth, and cheekbones. Her eyebrows showed off her beautiful eyes, and
long eye lashes. This is the woman that is my idol. Some of her best movies
where Possessed, The Women, Mildred Pierce, Autumn Leaves, and Whatever
Happened to Baby Jane? Joan Crawford may not have been the perfect mother, or
the perfect wife, but to me ... the person that wants to be like her and loves
her (even though I never met her) she is. Her greatest fan! Always and
forever!" Laurie
(USA) on Joan Crawford
"Joan Crawford was the epitome of glamour in the 1930s. She was
queen of movies and fashion. In real life, she definitely had her
faults, but she had an iron-strong will to constantly revitalize her career
and fame when the other stars around her were not able to. She came from
a nightmarish background and was a true example of the American Dream, even
though that dream was cursed with ego and dysfunction." John
(USA) on Joan Crawford
"... because she was the true example of how a person can be in control,
have a strong presence, throw some attitude and still get some sympathy in the
end (you know we all hate that daughter of hers for all those lies! :-)" Annie
(USA) on Joan Crawford
"She was the greatest actress that was put on screen. She is
irreplaceable." Josef
(USA) on Joan Crawford

human problems, she surpassed that in her time and became a goddess!" Debbie
(USA) on Joan Crawford
"... because Joan Crawford defined the word diva! She didn't take
s*** from no one including those brats she had for children. And I loved her
line to the Pepsi Cola board after her husband died, "Don't f*** with me
fellas, this ain't my first time at the rodeo!" Joan Crawford was truly a
diva ahead of her time." Cliff
(USA) on Joan Crawford
"A class act spanning 60 years in cinema!" Valpy
(UK) on Joan Crawford
Stunningly beautiful when she was young. Remained glamorous all her life. Had
a long and popular film career - nearly 50 years. Was a star on and off the
screen. Constantly changed and adapted her image over the years and remained
popular because of it. Was hard working. Courteous to her colleagues.
Appreciated her fans. Gracious in her old age. When she's on screen you just
can't take your eyes off her. Eclipses all other performers around her.
Earnest and determined. Jon
(USA) on Joan Crawford
"Joan Crawford is the epitome of the diva! She is the ultimate! Most
people consider Joan Crawford as one of the most glamorous women ever! In her
autobiography, there was over 100 pages on ways to keep yourself looking
beautiful and glamorous ("Mirrors should be placed everywhere in your
house, so where ever you are, you can see yourself. And it works; just look at
me!"). She also lied about her age, insisting she was born in 1908, but
some say she was born in 1904 or 1906. She stole the spotlight at the
Academy Awards for 1962, accepting for Anne Bancroft (to anger Bette Davis,
who planned on winning). There is also plenty of mystery, including Mommie
Dearest which may or may not be true. And finally, lots of tragedy and one of
the most enduring careers in Hollywood history! Her movies spanned five
decades! When she was young, for tragedy, she was abused and beaten by her
cruel mother, sent to boarding school and forced to work to pay the school
bills! And she was also beaten by the head of the school. So, if you want the
ultimate diva, you need not look any further than Joan Crawford; the Golden
Goddess of the Silver Screen." John
(USA) on Joan Crawford
"Beauty. Strength. Class. Enduring, timeless qualities to her
performances. Her films still hold up superbly. I watch them each time with
the same enjoyment as the first time I saw them. Joan Crawford was the
only actress who could portray suffering and despair with any real conviction.
Favorite films: The Damned Don't Cry, Humoresque, Whatever Happened To
Baby Jane?", Rain, Mildred Pierce, and Daisy Kenyon." Jenny
(USA) on Joan Crawford
"'... 'cause she's the greatest, that's why. She managed to be a
star and an actress, not to mention a Pepsi executive. Her first priority were
her fans, and she wouldn't do anything to disappoint them." Christiane

(USA) on Joan Crawford
"Legendary beauty Joan
Crawford is the greatest movie diva (and star of the century) because her
career spanned five decades in as many genres: flapper, socialite or
social-climbing shopgirl wanting, suffering all-woman, bitchy boss, horror
victim, you name it. She is the ultimate film diva."
David

Crawford is the best ever in whatever she does. The words 'Joan Crawford"

"She was so in
control! She put her mind to something and made it happen. She took crap from
nobody. She slept with all of her leading men, and none of them could say
no...you gotta admire that! Her image and her career were like a sculpture she
spent every day of her life perfecting, like the finest piece of art. Joan
kicks ass...what more can I say?" Carl
(USA) on Joan Crawford
"Joan Crawford's eyes are windows into her soul. When you
look at Joan Crawford's face when she is in a movie one is not looking at a
character or a performance, one is looking at her personal pain and struggle." Adam

"... because she is
sublime!"
