Alice
Ghostley was released upon the world in the revue Leonard
Sillman's New Faces of 1952, where she proved her comedic chops
alongside Eartha Kitt and Paul Lynde.
However, Ghostley could really sing as well (not to mention
play tragedy), and she proved this by singing the role of Dinah in the
Broadway premiere of Leonard Bernstein's mini-opera Trouble in
Tahiti, which was part of a bigger evening entitled All in
One (1955). Other musical theatre credits include Sandhog
(1954) and the flop Shangri-La (1956), as well playing
Bitchy-Hilarious Stepsister alongside Kaye
Ballard in the telecast of Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella (1957).
Ghostley was nominated for a Tony Award as Best Featured Actress in a
Play for The Beauty Part (1963), and went on to win in the
same category a few years later for The Sign in Sidney Brustein's
Window (1965). Her last appearance on Broadway was as a
replacement Mrs. Hannigan in Annie, but today she is
recognized by most people as Bernice from TV's Designing Women. |
