Barbra
Streisand splashed upon the scene in Harold
Rome's I Can Get it For You Wholesale, stopping the show with
her hilarious performance of "Miss Marmelstein." Then
she was shot to superstardom in Jule Styne and Bob Merril's Funny
Girl, introducing the world to such classic hits as
"People" and "Don't Rain on My Parade." After
that she made one return in a revival of Rome's left-wing revue Pins
& Needles (where she started "Doing the Reactionary"
and demanded "Nobody Makes a Pass at Me!") but essentially
left the Broadway scene forever, for the more comfortable world of
Hollywood and the recording studio. Admittedly though, there was a
period in Hollywood where it was against the law to make a movie musical
without Babs in the lead, and that period gave us the film versions of Funny
Girl, On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, and Hello,
Dolly!, while appearing in the original musical films Yentl
and Funny Lady, among others. Her Broadway Album
was a number one top-seller. |
