Christine
Ebersole took on the role of Agnes the Maid in On
the Twentieth Century (1978), after Judy Kaye succeeded Madeline
Kahn as Lily Garland, after which she won the role of Ado Annie in a
revival of Oklahoma! (1979). After playing Guenevere in
Richard Burton's short-lived revival of Camelot (1980), she
played the
hilariously bitchy Gerta Granville in the flop Harrigan 'n' Hart (1985),
after which she disappeared from the Broadway stage for over a decade.
In the intervening years she appeared as a regular cast member on SNL
(1981-82) and in the role of Miss Tessie-Tura in the telecast of Gypsy
(1993) starring Bette Midler,
before returning to the Great White Way in Stephen Sondheim and George
Furth's comedy-thriller Getting Away With Murder (1996).
After appearing with Chris Noth in a revival of Gore Vidal's The Best
Man (2000), she won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical as
Dorothy Brock in the revival of 42nd Street (2001). Since
then she has received a Tony nod for her appearance in a revival of George
S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber's Dinner at Eight (2003) and as M'Lynn
in a revival Steel Magnolias (2005). Ebersole is also
a very dedicated AIDS activist, and her up-coming plans include Grey
Gardens, which premieres at Playwrights Horizons in 2006. |
