How
could we ever forget the Three Bs? Those Big, Black, and Beautiful
Ladies of Song! These women, whether praising the Lord (like the
divine Mahalia Jackson) or infusing old standards with underlying messages
of racial oppression (as did the brilliant Dr. Nina Simone), were the practitioners
of a distinctly American art form. Since there is a distinct
difference between Gospel music and Secular jazz show-stoppers, we have
divided this list of unparalleled women into two different categories:
"Bible Belting Babes" and "Bad-Ass Boulevard Broads."
