Ruth Brown

 

Born Ruth Weston on January 30, 1928, in Portsmouth, VA, Ruth Brown started out singing in church. In 1945, she ran away from home to sing in bars and clubs. In 1948, she was performing in a club in Washington, DC, and the heads of Atlantic Records came to see her. Ruth produced a series of hit songs for Atlantic Records. She was inducted into the R&B Hall of Fame in 1993.
