The Clark Sisters

The Clark Sisters are a group of legendary gospel vocalists based out of Detroit, consisting of Dorinda, Karen, Jacky, Twinkie and Denise (Denise is not in the picture and no longer sings with the Clark Sisters). The Clark Sisters are listed in the order that they are in the picture. They have been the premier female group in gospel music for almost 30 years. The Clark Sisters are the daughters of the equally legendary Dr. Mattie Moss Clark. They have recorded over 10 albums as a group and are best known for their crossover hit You Brought The Sunshine which lit-up dance floors, urban America, and the church in the 1980s. Their hit Is My Living In Vain was covered by R&B girl-group Xscape. Each sister brings a distinct and essential flavor to the Clark sound. Dorinda is the jazzy sister whose scats and riffs are other-worldly. Karen, the youngest of the group, is the often-imitated, but never duplicated world-renowned, octave jumper. Her vocal techniques can not be studied in school. Karen’s vocals have influenced artists both gospel and secular. Jacky brings a balance to the high energy vocals of her younger sisters, by having a sweet, yet versatile delivery. Twinkie is the creative force behind the group and is an extremely talented vocalist who can sing soprano to bass with relative ease. Denise, who no longer sings with the group is no less a vocalist. The Clark Sisters are still the most relevant female gospel group in history and Twinkie is one of the progenitor’s of contemporary gospel music. All of the sisters, except for Denise, have released solo projects.
