American soprano
Anna Moffo was much admired for
the purity of her voice and her great physical beauty. She wanted to
become a nun and was offered a Hollywood career but in the end her
love for music won out. She made
her stage debut in 1955 as Norina in Donizetti's Don
Pasquale in Spoleto, Italy. Moffo was particularly popular in
Italy where she caused a scandal in 1969 when she appeared nude in a
scene in the Italian film Una Storia d'Amore. Moffo died in New
York City, in 2006, from a stroke after grappling with complications
of breast cancer. To this day, her interpretation of Amina in
Vincenzo Bellini's La Sonnambula is considered to be among the
very best. |
