Soprano Carlotta
Marchisio (1835-1872) often sang with her sister
Barbara, a contralto. Legend has it that once, when Barbara
was ill and wanted to cancel a performance, Carlotta sang in her stead,
hidden behind the scene. Nobody in attendance seemed to
notice the swap! She was a student of Luigi Fabbrica in Turin.
Today, there are source disagreements about her debut: one has her debut
in Venice and another in Madrid (singing Norma to her sister's Adalgisa).
She appeared in all the leading Italian cities, as well as St.
Petersburg, London, and Paris, and Rossini composed his Petite Messe
Solennelle for her and her sister. |
