Eugenia Tadolini

 

Eugenia Tadolini (1809-1851), a soprano who specialized in the works of Donizetti, is most well known for what she didn't get cast in.  In a letter explaining why he would not want to see her cast as Lady Macbeth, Verdi wrote, "Tadolini is a fine figure of a woman, and I would like Lady Macbeth to look ugly and malignant...  Tadolini has a marvelous voice, clear, limpid and strong, and I would rather that Lady's voice were rough, hollow, stifled.  Tadolini's voice has something angelic in it.  Lady Macbeth's should have something devilish."
