Tadolini (1809-1851), a soprano who specialized in the works of
Donizetti, is most well known for what she didn't get cast in.
In a letter explaining why he would not want to see her cast as Lady
Macbeth, Verdi wrote, "Tadolini is a fine figure of a woman, and I
would like Lady Macbeth to look ugly and malignant... Tadolini has a
marvelous voice, clear, limpid and strong, and I would rather that Lady's
voice were rough, hollow, stifled. Tadolini's voice has something
angelic in it. Lady Macbeth's should have something devilish." |
