The essential
Bellinian soprano of her day, Giuditta Pasta
created the title roles in Donizetti's Anna Bolena and in
Bellini's La sonnambula and Norma -- three
different roles that today are considered to be the domain of three
entirely different kinds of voices. After having heard her
sing her Farewell Concert in London in 1850, Pauline
Viardot said of of Pasta's voice: "It is like the Cenacolo
of da Vinci at Milan... a wreck of a picture, but the picture is
the greatest picture in the world!" |
