Born in Augusta,
Georgia in 1945 and nicknamed Just Enormous for her powerful
voice and range, Jessye Norman is
one of the most renowned dramatic soprano singers and recitalists, and
one of the highest paid performers in classical music in the world.
She made her operatic debut in 1969 as Elisabeth in Richard
Wagner's Tannhäuser at the Berlin State Opera, and assumed main
roles at La Scala and Covent Garden during the '70s. Norman made
her debut in 1983 at the Metropolitan Opera in Berlioz's Les
Troyens in a production which marked the company's 100th
anniversary season. In 2006 she received the Grammy Lifetime
Achievement Award. Many credit her as the inspiration for the title
character in the 1981 French film Diva. |
