Despite her
small stature and light and lovely voice, Kathleen
Battle is probably known as the biggest D-Word out of all the
women on our list. After all, she was fired from the Met for her bad
behavior. Rumor has it that once, during a Met engagement, she
slapped one of her dressers in the face-but that dresser's husband was the
follow-spot operator, and the couple got their revenge when La Battle sang
that evening's performance entirely in the dark. Battle majored in
music education rather than performance, began her career as a teacher in
Cincinnati. Legend has it that all of her 5th and 6th grade students
came to see her in a performance-but had all fallen asleep before she made
her first entrance. In 1999, Battle was inducted into the NAACP
Image Hall of Fame. |
