Monsterrat
Caballé is a world-famous tempestuous Diva, highly-regarded
for her shimmering, lovely pianissimo. And while she might
sing a high note piano when Verdi actually asked for it to
be mezzo-forte, or
perhaps even hold said high note for a bit longer than is asked, she
does this in such a beautiful way that one can only imagine Verdi was
mistaken, and the Diva is, in fact, the correct party. She is
highly acclaimed for her Lìu, Salome, and others, and is a particularly
winning Soprano soloist in Verdi's Requiem. A recent DVD
release of a documentary showing rehearsals at La Scala for
performances of the Verdi Requiem, reveal a true Caballé
moment: in rehearsal, the pianist plays her first note-- several
times-- and each time she misses it, falling into a gale of giggles,
which quickly have the chorus and conductor laughing, too. |
