As their relationship developed,
the Prince and Wallis gave each other tiny inscribed charms, mostly made by
Cartier in London, many in the form of bejewelled Latin crosses. Wallis wore
hers on a bracelet, the Prince wore his on a necklace. Some commemorate
personal events while others refer to anniversaries. The earliest carries
the date March 1934 while the last refers to a stomach operation Wallis
underwent in New York in 1944. The entire collection was sold by Sotheby's
in Geneva in 1987, along with the rest of the Duchess's jewelry, for the
benefit of her heir, the Pasteur institute. |
