In 1974 Beverly Johnson was the first African American to appear on the cover of American Vogue. Ms. Johnson's appearance on American newsstands was a landmark that helped expand the notion of beauty and it helped dispel the myth that white women would not buy a fashion magazine with a black model on the cover. Her sleek and sculptural beauty kept her at the forefront of fashion photography for over a decade.
