It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.

Pride and Prejudice (1813), Jane Austen

Women writers! To many men, that phrase conjures up a scenario of mayhem,  muckraking, and meddling. Women were hardly encouraged to write by men-- after all, men invented high heels so that women couldn't run away! But it had to happen, though, for many centuries, writing was considered something that women could freely indulge in at home-- they could still keep an eye on the  kiddies while penning poetry, prose, and polemics-- so long as their work stayed politely within the cupboards. In time, the advents of enlightenment, reason, and women's rights brought masses of women out from their houses and into the  streets and the offices, and soon the world became a markedly different-- and  better-- place. No longer would their voices be kept confined within the constraints of mental girdles. Witness this selection of women writers!
