"Strong woman, strong voice!"
FeAudrey
(USA) on Elizabeth
Cady Stanton
"Pioneer feminist and radical's radical - look up the story of how Susan
B. Anthony was unable to prevent her being kicked out of the suffrage
association after ECS published a controversial book about religion (The
Women's Bible) - combined with a long, happy marriage (to another reformer)
and a large family (a bit rowdy - look up the story of SBA packing the boys
off to military school so that she and ECS could do some serious planning in
peace."

clothes! The lingerie! The husbands!"

in person too.”

the best musical player I have ever known."
Scott
(USA) on Katharine Hepburn
"She was in lots of movies and a great actress up until her death."
Susan
(Israel) on Joan Collins
"She's common, she can't act, her lipstick is unsubtle ... but after a
post-war ingénue apprenticeship, and subsequent decades of oblivion, she
re-invented herself as a middle-aged sex symbol in 'Dynasty.' To have the
chutzpah ... to dare to be tacky."
Carla
(Italy) on Kate Bush
"She's great!"
C.C.
(USA) on Patti LuPone
"Her voice has a very full and satisfying sound to it."
Angela
(USA) on Mary J. Blige
"Her music truly moves me. She shows how real a person she is. Unlike

Robin

diva that still attracts my full attention."
Ruth
(UK) on Meryl Streep
"Beautiful, talented and funny - she's a real diva!"
Steve
(USA) on Mother Teresa
"She was a saint to everyone and a very caring woman."
Missy

was very nice when I met her, and she is just great!"
Erica

Chris

"She played all types of roles. Very unique actress and no other actress
could impersonate her style."
Jana
(Germany) on Ruthie Henshall
"She has such a great voice."
Paul
(USA) on Madonna
"She is the epitome of modern glamour. She continues to define and
redefine what is hot and what is not. She has taken over the reigns from Princess
Di as the world's most popular woman. Can you or anyone debate that?"
Goran
(UK) on Céline Dion
"My answer could fill a book! Unrivalled range, incredible power, superb songs, heart radiant in
marvelous emotions, inspiring personality,
formidable performer, divine talent both in French and English, the most
valuable treasure on the planet ... the most intelligent instrument on earth
and a gift from the heavens!"
Mary
(USA) on Hillary Rodham Clinton
"She's got amazing stamina, stands for positive growth and necessary
change, seems to be very sincere."
Mary
(USA) on Kathy Bates
"Consistently flawless performances, I love the way she looks, she's just
great."
Petra
(Germany) on Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Sissi)
"She was a very modern spirit in stuffy and pompous 19th century Austria.
She was very beautiful, but suffered from bulimia and was unhappy at the
court, so she flew from court and traveled throughout Europe with her own
train. She was politically liberal and also wrote poems. In the end she was
murdered by an anarchist."
Nessy
(USA) on Jaclyn Smith
"Kelly Garrett was the coolest character ever."
Rebecca
(Australia) on Sally Field
"Sally is a very versatile actress, which is a necessity to stay on the
screens, which she has successfully done. Sally is a timeless classic."
Andrew
(Hong Kong) on Meryl Streep
"She acted so well in "The bridge of Madison County"."
Bastiaan
Johannes (Canada) on Edith Piaf
"Like me, we regret nothing."
Stosh
(USA) on Madonna
"She is the biggest pop icon ever! Constantly changing and inventing new
trends for all of us."
Justyna
(USA) on Natalie Wood
"Great and beautiful actress."
Aina
(Poland) on Ingrid Bergman
"She was so sweet. She was wonderful, mother, wife (or maybe not). Anyway,
I like her."
D.J.
(USA) on Marilyn Monroe
"She lived for her acting. She is forever bound to us in movies that she
worked hard in. She deserves to be a diva. She began all alone and struggled
for her fame and died alone in vain."
Andrew
(Canada) on Bernadette Peters
"She's a beauty!"
D.A.
(Germany) on Katharine Hepburn
"Great actress, sympathetic."
Eva
(Italy) on Hillary Clinton
"She's the best! She has all the characteristics to change everything.
She's powerful!"
Marianna
(USA) on Gene Tierney
"'Heaven can wait'"
Tony
(Ireland) on Alison Moyet
"This woman is one of the best singers ever. She can convey passion and
emotion in her voice without resorting to histrionics and her lyrics are
imaginative, colourful, intelligent and witty. Because she is fat (her own
self-description, by the way), she is - ridiculously - overlooked. She has
bravely sidestepped commercialism to follow her artistic vision. As a woman
she is funny, beautiful, witty and compassionate. Unlike many stars, she
regularly interacts with her fans on her excellent website (www.alisonmoyet.com).
This humanity is, in my opinion, the mark of a real diva!"
Breonna
(UK) on Gene Tierney
"I've read 'Self Portrait' and she was beautiful inside too."
Markus
(France) on Gene Tierney
"She's the hottest dame that ever was."
Samuele
(Italy) on Alison Moyet
"Her style changed the way I watch myself."
Siri
(Norway) on Gene Tierney
"I saw her in 'Laura' and was impressed."
David
(USA) on Donna Summer
"She's beautiful and one of the best singers ever."
Julia
(USA) on Reba McEntire
"She sings about real stuff, and it's always from the heart."
Erin
(Canada) on Bernadette Peters
"Bernadette is a wonderful performer ... she sings, she dances, she acts
... plus she's got a great personality. Her involvement with Fido NYC has made
a huge difference - She's definitely a one of kind Diva!"
Chris
(USA) on Bernadette Peters
"'Annie Get Your Gun' was awesome, I loved her in 'Pink Cadillac', too."
Hilary
(USA) on Céline Dion
"I think that Céline Dion is a beautiful person. She knows what she
wants, and never gives up. I look up to her for that. Her music is awesome,
and she has a great talent."
Darren
(UK) on Madonna
"How can you have a 'diva' site without a mention of the biggest and most
important woman star ... Madonna? Hmm seems strange to have Cher listed and
not her!"
Julie
(Norway) on Gene Tierney
"... because of her awesome glamour!"
Julie
(UK) on Gene Tierney
"... because of 'Leave Her To Heaven'."
Geir
(Norway) on Gene Tierney
"She's sexy."
B.B.
(USA) on Sophie Tucker
"... because you have Tallulah. If you have Tallulah, you have to have
Sophie. Besides she's old fashioned and out of date and I love her and she
belongs in any tabulations such as this ... and near the top."
Satoru
(Japan) on Kiri te Kanawa
"Great volume of voice. Can hear without microphone
at large concert halls. The Origin of History."
Dedra
(USA) on Marilyn Monroe
"Ms. Monroe is an icon. She may have been no angel, but she was
beautiful. I can't believe she's not on your list."
Chris
(USA) on Tallulah Bankhead
"Tallulah, Marlene, Joan are my all time favorite divas! There story
speaks for itself! Divvvvvine Dahhhhhling!"
B.B.
(USA) on Tallulah Bankhead
"She invented Bette Davis before Bette did (whom you have ranked WAAY too
low.) She had talent and was funny both on and off stage. She had a
brain and was fully alive. Tragedy? Lotsa that."
Ellen
(USA) on Meryl Streep
"This woman can do drama and comedy and has proven herself time and again
as the consummate actress."
Denise
(Brazil) on Queen Sylvia
"... because she's a great and good woman!"
Raquel
(USA) on Hedy Lamarr
"Look closely! And hear the skies say, 'woman'."
Rebecca
(UK) on Katharine Hepburn
"... cos she is the best actress of her age and each film gives the
audience a new glimpse of her character. Each film is done with such
determination that you just can't help but love her."
Leon
(Belgium) on Kristina Bach
"Nothing is forced, neither extremely dressed nor scary make-up, she's
natural, she's got pep."
Straus
(USA) on Cicely Tyson
"This lady can play any role. What else needs to be said. The only
problem is giving her a chance to work. If she were younger..."
Lee
(USA) on Rickie Lee Jones
"What a beautiful and well presented site. I do think that you need to
add Rickie Lee Jones to your company of singers. She has so greatly influenced
American song writing and singing. For further biographical information, you
could go to her (also beautiful) web site at: www.rickieleejones.com.
This year she will receive the Luigi Tenco award in Italy for marrying beauty
and poetry to song. I mention this since one of the Divas on your page also
had a very special connection to this most prestigious Italian musical
honor."
Sean
(USA) on Queen Elizabeth II
"She is a queen and judging by your pic she was beautiful looking when
young. Princess Diana was pretty, but she didn't act like a leader. Margaret
Thatcher was the ultimate leader, but she was too old to qualify. When I think
of a Diva I think of someone with all the required qualities, but most
importantly young and beautiful when they were active in their careers. A lot
of the movers and shakers pics looked like homeless bag ladies. Just my
opinion, of course."
Sean
(USA) on Donna Summer
"The complete package!"
Hannah
(UK) on Ruthie Henshall
"... because her performance ability is breath taking. She is an
inspiration. Thank you, Ruthie!"
Ashely
(USA) on Jodie Foster
"... because I think she is the coolest."
Frank
(Holland) on Kate Bush
"The voice!"
Tim
(USA) on Faith Hill
"Faith Hill is absolutely the most talented, beautiful, sexy, humble, and
exciting female singer today. She definitely gets my vote!"
Kerri
(USA) on Mary J. Blige
"She is my favorite because in her music she tells the truth and what is
really going on and not just what people want to hear but what needs to be
heard. People can feel her music and relate."
Todd
(USA) on Laura Pausini and Jeanne Mas
"Great site - and of course gratifying to see that the unparalleled Frida
ranks # 1 of singing divas - she is the best! However I am very shocked to see
two major world divas missing from your ranks - the first and foremost being
the beautiful and talented (yet difficult) French mega-star Jeanne Mas (who
makes Agnetha Fältskog & Diana Ross together look like a walk in the
park) and the second being the beautiful and talented Italian/Spanish/English
(record market) star Laura Pausini - who has a huge worldwide following. I
realize that neither of these two divas have great followings in the USA, but
they are definitely candidates - at least for inclusion in your
"runners-up" page. Anyway, keep up the good work an don't forget
about Jeanne Mas or Laura Pausini."
John
(USA) on Donna Summer
"Absolutely fabulous!"
Adam
(Scotland) on Mary Queen of Scots
"If that evil and barren old boot, Elizabeth I is to feature here, her cousin,
Mary Queen of Scots deserves an even higher place in the rankings. This woman
became Queen of her country at 6 days old and Queen of France at 14 years.
What other woman has been Queen Consort of one country and Queen Regnant of
another before even achieving adulthood? She was 1m 78cm tall (huge for a
woman in the 1500s), had lustrous red hair, spoke several languages and was a
highly accomplished horsewoman and musician. Although a Roman Catholic she was
sympathetic to and tolerant of other people's religions (unlike her
bloodthirsty, murdering cousins Mary and Elizabeth in England). She was
ultimately a victim of other people's intolerance - principally members of her
own family, and perished on the axeman's block purely as a result of her
paranoid and jealous cousin Elizabeth's frantic clinging to power. Ironically
it was Mary who ensured the continuation of the monarchy in England when she
gave birth to a son - something none of that pathetic trio of Tudors - Edward,
Mary or Elizabeth had managed to do! Her place in the annals of divadom is far
more deserved than that of the usurper Elizabeth!"
R.N.
(USA) on Patti Lupone
"She has one of the most powerful, exquisite voices I have ever heard on stage.
She commands every performance and captures the audience awestruck every time."
Ronny
(USA) on Joan Collins
"She is a drama goddess, full of talent, intellect, charm, beauty, and grace.
She wasn't perfect, but she didn't take no shit."
Danielle
(Canada) on Mother Teresa
"Although I love Eva Perón, Mother Teresa helped so many people who had so
little, even though she had nothing. She gave up a comfy life to do this. This
is a woman that really shows what our world should be like. One day I hope to
help as many people as she did."
Dominic
(UK) on Anne-Marie Almedal
"As well as being lovely to look at, her voice is beautiful and both warm and
haunting to hear. Some times her voice reminds me of Joni Mitchel a little,
and then her voice reminds me of Karen Carpenter at times too. Her voice has a
sense of purity to it. It's a joy to hear her voice and be warmed by it, when
living in a haunted world. Anne-Marie is the singer for a Norwegian band
called Velvet Belly."
Clarice
(Canada) on Katharine Hepburn
"… because she single-handedly fashioned the shape of style of the
1930s-40's. She's an incredible actress who's made some of the most
powerful, influential and incredible films of all time!"
Lea
(Philippines) on Ruthie Henshall
"She is an amazingly talented singer, dancer, and actress. She is gorgeous, and
a very kind person as well, and she's got all the qualities of a true diva!"
Gregory
(Holland) on Leontyne Price
"Price has been my inspiration since I first heard her in 1970 and I tried hard
to find a vocally more splendid voice in the world, but alas! She filled many
troubled days in my life with joy because of her singing and what she projects
strayed to my heart, love and true believe in one self! I thank God for giving
me the luck to have found her singing in my life! Thanks Miss Price and God
bless you!"
Carol
(UK) on Mother Teresa
"She was not self centered and only thought about helping unfortunate people.
Whether they were inflicted with leprosy or other diseases. She did not
discriminate at all."
F.B.
(USA) on Katharine Hepburn
"… because she "wore the pants, even when the pants were a
skirt." She revolutionized acting for women, proving a woman was man's
equal. And she did it independent of any one movie studio. She had her goal
and purposes, and stuck to them, tenaciously. She knew what she wanted and she
got it. Plus, she survived in the industry well into her seventies."
Ron
(USA) on Raquel Welch
"I think she is one of the most beautiful and sexy women in the
world."
Jude
(New Zealand) on Ella Fitzgerald
"Her voice is so powerful and she is so talented. She is amazing. When I
listen to her music I just close my eyes and picture myself there in the club
listing to her live, she is the queen of music."
Boris
(USA) on Madonna
"She has done what no other artist has done. Opened doors for others, and
has staying power. Her music is great!"
Richard
(USA) on Ann-Margret
"Blew upon the scene as one of the hottest, sexiest entertainers in the
business and then surprised everyone with an acting ability as incredible as
her face and body."
Kiley
(USA) on Barbara Stanwyck
"The variety of the roles she played from comedy to drama!"
Nancy
(USA) on Tina Turner
"Tina's energy, her beliefs - pushing through limitations, edges, hard driving. Tina
gets to my heart without hesitation."
Soledad
(Argentina) on Diana Rigg
"... because she has a strong personality, could fight like a man and
still be a woman, an example of femininity."
Ben
(UK) on Ruthie Henshall
"She's sexy, a great actress and has a voice that raises the hairs on the
back of your neck. She's a true star."
Grant
(USA) on Joni Mitchell
"She's tackled just about every genre of music, endured for almost 4
decades, and been a major influence on so many younger artists. Writer
of not just penetrating lyrics but musician and composer as well.
Besides writing and composing some 200 songs of her own she's covered
"standards" with unique style, grace, and technique. Of the
songstress most divine, what more can I say."
Barbara
(USA) on Sally Field
"Where is Sally Field in your list of Divas?"
Peter
(USA) on Shania Twain
"She is hot! She has brought country into the mainstream. I worship her!"
Vidar
(Norway) on Gene Tierney
"... because she was the epitome of glamour."
Laura
(USA) on Madonna
"Madonna has captured the hearts and minds of millions of people all over
the world, and held them captive for two decades, while steadfastly remaining
true to herself, for better or for worse. She has maintained her dignity and
proved her intelligence while experimenting with her own sexuality and
challenging people's notions of their own. Although she has vicious
detractors, she's never given up taking risks, taking on new roles, and
striving to improve her acting and singing, while refusing to compromise her
message. Madonna has taught all of us how strength of character, self-esteem,
and the desire to learn all of life's lessons can keep a person vital and a
celebrity relevant over a lifetime."
Lair
(USA) on Nina Simone
"The club was packed & noisy with anticipation. Then a hushed whisper
swept the room. "She's up there on the balcony, looking down on us,
checking us out," someone murmured. And there she was, glaring down at
us. Finally, as the room quieted, a single sound grunted forth:
"Uh-uh!" And she twirled around and was gone, leaving her with
nothing to do but go get our money back and then go home and play her albums.
There would be no show that night. Such a bitch - that's our Nina!"
Lair
(USA) on Hillary Rodham Clinton
"The only possible challenger to Hillary might be Queen Elizabeth I - but
Liz is dead and Hillary is very much alive, still making waves, and she's
still apt to rule the world someday. Watch your nylons!"
Wilfred
(Philippines) on Ingrid Bergman
"Cool and unconventional with the will to face her aggressors."
David
(USA) on Mother Teresa
"Actions speak louder than words, her good works were unparalleled."
Lolita
(Spain) on Janet Leigh
"She was a very good actress & always wore elegant clothes, even off
screen."
Ray
(UK) on Barbara Stanwyck
"... because she was without a doubt the most underrated actress of all
time. Now she is recognized as a great, great talent. Her performances, even
in her early 30's films have not dated at all. Also, unlike Davis and
Crawford, she was a great comedienne. One of the biggest miscarriages of the
Academy was, that she not only did not win an Oscar for "The Lady
Eve", she was not even nominated! That film stands supreme as not only
one of the greatest comedies of all time, but in my humble opinion Stanwyck's
greatest performance!"
Randy
(USA) on Queen Marie Antoinette
"Beautiful woman, charm, style, taste. World figure and renown in her
time. Did her best in impossible time. Faced tragic destiny and total reversal
in life's fortune with grim courage, worthy of the queen she was."
Jue
(USA) on Susan Hayward
"Beauty, talent, pride, brains, independence, strength, courage!"
Antonio
(Italy) on Sally Kellerman
"Well, I have seen all her movies and I asked myself why are all the
movies she is in so good? It's because of Sally Kellerman. Every movie with
her is great!"
Danny
(Dominican Republic) on Meryl Streep
"All of her performances are wonderful!"
F.L.
(Germany) on Ingrid Bergman
"She's my absolute favorite. She originally came from Sweden, one of my
favorite countries in Europe. She's played several demanding roles in
"Notorious", "Casablanca", "The Inn of the Sixth
Happiness", "Anastasia" and so on. Apart from these roles she
also acted in comedies like "Cactus Flower" or
"Indiscreet". In addition to that she performed on the stage. So,
for me, she was a complete actress in every part on the screen.
Apart from that, she had a very lovely look in her eyes which can't be
disregarded."
Martijn
(Holland) on Cathérine Deneuve
"There's only one Deneuve!"
Stefaan
(Belgium) on Doris Day
"Doris Day played wonderfully in 'Midnight Lace', 'Pillow Talk' ..."

earth, a sex goddess, and now that she's a mom she is the all around diva."
James
(USA) on Myrna Loy
"She's a great actress and she is very beautiful."
Kate
(UK) on Annie Lennox
"She has such an powerful voice and is so concerned with charity work and
is so down to earth that she is just simply amazing! Also, I respect her
for the way she doesn't seek the media's attention all the time. She is
a very private person and I respect her greatly for this."
Anthony
(USA) on Coretta Scott King
"What can I say, the woman has power, so does her husband. They both have
touched this world with their love, strength, hope for the future, and most of
all their willingness to want to make this world a better place. Coretta does
not have to say anything to anyone to state that she is a diva, all people
have to do is take one good look at her husband. Then they will know that she
is truly a "powerful diva.""
Anthony
(USA) on Dorothy Dandridge
"Dorothy Dandridge is my favorite diva because she has that power in her
moves and style. Dorothy knows that when she steps on stage, she brings life
to the room. Dorothy is one of those classy women where, she has power in
everything that she does. She is one of those divas that deserves to go on the
Wall of Diva Fame."
David
(UK) on Diana Rigg
"Superb in The Avengers, and who else could shake of the 'Super-Woman'
tag and become a British Dame!"
Renee
(USA) on Helen Hunt
"The actresses from the golden age of movies aren't necessarily the
acting divas. Helen Hunt deserves this honor so early in her career, because
of her dedication to the acting craft. So many females are being discovered in
Hollywood for their looks only, (Gwyneth Paltrow, Renee' Zellwegger).
Finally, Hollywood got one right! Helen Hunt not only has looks and
personality, but talent. Excellent job Hollywood and Helen Hunt!"
Dawn
(USA) on Lucy Lawless
"She can kick a** and not break a sweat."

talented."
Joe
(USA) on Cathérine Deneuve
"Cathérine is mysterious, beautiful, reserved, yes, but also gracious
with fans and just as happy at her country home with her cats and her garden
as at a film festival where she is the center of attention. She has not sold
out and continues to work steadily on carefully chosen projects with the
creative people who interest her most."
Tracey

"Great actress!"
Genah
(USA) on Jaclyn Smith
"She is a beautiful person inside and outside."

Very Talented."
Leila

She is an up and coming Diva."
James
(USA) on Marilyn Monroe
"She should be on this list!"
Tariq-Kieran
(Canada) on Betty Buckley
"As any great diva, when she walks onto the stage, you can't take your
eyes off of her but the best part is that she has talent to back up the
wonderful star presence. She brings great character development to each role
she plays, with a wonderfully strong voice - at times powerfully belting past
the back row, at other times singing in almost a whisper. She's been willing
to make her voice sound less 'pretty' at times, to make particular songs, or
lines within certain songs, sound more honest. Well, those are a few reasons
why I think Betty Buckley is just swell!"
Peter
(USA) on Joan Collins
"I love Star Trek and she did a cameo."
Shirley
(USA) on Joan Collins
"I adore glamour and she is completely glamorous. So stylish..."

Palisades!"
Ralph
(Belgium) on Joan Collins
"My mother's British and she's called Joan too. She even looks quite like
her!"
Craig
(UK) on Joan Collins
"We all watch Dynasty on cable TV in our flat, its fabby."
Erick
(USA) on Leontyne Price
"Diva means goddess, and originally applied only to a particular type of
opera singer - one with a spectacular voice and style who was capable of
swaying royalty and other heads of state. In this century there has only been
one who fits the original criteria: Leontyne Price. She still holds the
record for the longest standing ovation at the Met, has 18 personal Grammy
Awards plus 3 others for full opera recordings (yes, she beats out Aretha
Franklin in total awards). Politicians in America didn't care what Rosa Parks
went through - they were more concerned with social rank, which in the early
1960's still involved opera, which is why Lyndon Johnson awarded the Medal of
Freedom to Leontyne Price. He has credited her with being his and JFK's
inspiration to pushing civil rights legislation in the U.S. She testified
before Congress on civil rights. How did she do this? By storming the floor,
electrifying the politicians with her singing, and then sweeping out again in
regal fashion. Her voice and passion eclipsed all around her. On a more
frivolous note, who else looked stunning with a huge Afro hairdo?! By the true
definition of the term diva all others are merely wanna-bes. Leontyne Price is
a Goddess, descended from on High!"
Carolyn
(USA) on Marilyn Monroe
"Marilyn was clever, witty, naturally beautiful, and fought hard to gain
the respect and love she missed as a young girl. She could have contributed so
much more to the world and to women's issues if she had lived."
Lindzie

drama, and romance in her life, and she will never be forgotten."

Rafic
(Lebanon) on Ann-Margret

screen in the 1940s. It's a shock not to find her on your list."
Stephen
(UK) on Tina Turner

entertain. I also like the way she just stays herself but incorporates new
styles into her music."

"I just adore Dynasty and those nasty lines!"
Jack
(USA) on Bernadette Peters
"She is the premiere interpreter of Sondheim songs. She's fabulosity
incarnate."

had the best cliffhanger storylines on Dynasty."
Craig
(Canada) on Joan Collins
"I just love those Nolan Miller gowns."
Nicola

"She's a British babe who stripped at 50 for Playboy, what a diva! And
her lover called her a f***ing bore and she retorted you're a boring f***! How
wonderful!"
Shabana
(UK) on Joan Collins
"The fights with Linda Evans and her very British putdowns!"
Julia
(UK) on Joan Collins
"Cheekbones and shoulder pads and the best catfights on screen ever! She
refuses to have her grandchildren raised by and 'ex-stenographer',
such bitchy glamour!"
Uwe
(Germany) on Nina Hagen
"She has a great big vocal range and did things Madonna did much later
very much earlier - like showing women on an Austrian TV Show (at the time a
big scandal) how to masturbate and get high on themselves! She does a lot of
benefits like for Aids research and PEta-Organizations, now she is doing
traditional Indian songs (great show!) and returned with her pop-rock CD 'The
Return Of The Mother'. A very funny, sometimes also nerve breaking person! But
I love it that there is someone like her in and 4 Germany!"
Missy
(USA) on Tina Turner
"This is a Diva! She has crawled out of a life of abuse and belittlement
and went further than she probably thought possible."
Missy
(USA) on Glenn Close
"She's beautiful & brilliant! You can bet any movie she is in will be
great. She's not just out for fame and a quick buck. She's taken a lot of
chances in her work. She's strong, and still feminine. A definite role model
for all of us!"
Chuck
(USA) on Ella Fitzgerald
"Ella needs no explanation!"
Joe
(USA) on Katherine Hepburn
"Comedy, drama, romance, she does it all exquisitely."
Joe
(USA) on Joni Mitchell
"Most divas merely perform; Mitchell creates."
Nick
(USA) on Annie Lennox
"Voice that conveys more emotion than any other human ever."
Richie
(USA) on Madonna
"She is just so cool and interesting."
C.B.
(USA) on Leontyne Price

master class Price gave for the Merola Opera Program in SF and she impressed
me enormously. Many will vote for Ross, but I wanted to put in a good word for
Price and not see her overlooked on this site."
Allison
(USA) on Carole Lombard
"She was a brilliant actress and not only that, she was a good person who
knew how to have a good time and not act superior ... and lastly, she died
serving her country through her efforts to help the soldiers during the war. What
more could I say?"
Donna
(USA) on Donna Summer
"She's still got the voice, she puts on a great concert and she's got
staying power."
Elise
(New-Zealand) on Queen Elizabeth II
"... because she has served her country so faithfully and
enthusiastically, despite the vicious rampages of the British tabloid press."
Elise
(New-Zealand) on Ingrid Bergman

"Been in love with her since 1975, none better. One of the most
unbelievable live performers ever."
Sharon
(USA) on Céline Dion
"Fabulous voice, extremely energetic, like her choice in music, very sensitive
person. She gave up her career for a while to stay with her sick husband, she
is so sweet to do that."
Elaine
(USA) on Maureen McGovern
"Certainly I believe DaDiva Maureen McGovern should be added to your
site. She herself, calls herself 'DaDiva'."
Susana
(Brazil) on Susan Sarandon
"I love her performance, her look, her ideology, her beauty. To see her
in movies is wonderful, a gift of God."
David
(UK) on Diana Rigg
"Dame Diana Rigg is one of the UK's leading actors. She is probably most
famous worldwide, however as the sixties icon Mrs. Emma Peel in The Avengers
TV series."

She enchants my heart."
Steven

(USA) on Myrna Loy
"She was an actress who could handle drama and comedy equally well. She
was glamourous, but was never aloof."
Jeff
(USA) on Alison Moyet
"She has a voice that can only be described as awesome. She is a great
songwriter/lyricist as well as a great interpreter of songs written by others."
Roselle
(USA) on Katharine Hepburn
"I love Katherine Hepburn because she played by her own rules and was an
independent woman in a time before the women's movement began. I also admire
her for being talented and smart."
Karen
(USA) on Rosalind Russell
"Her one-liners are delivered with perfect comedic timing and she was any
man's equal in early Hollywood."
Matt
(USA) on Donna Summer
"She is one of the most misunderstood artists of our time. Part rock,
part soul, part dance, part diva, Summer knows how to take her own twist on
things and make it musically fine."
Lori
(USA) on Annie Lennox
"A voice that is heaven-sent, a role model in life, mysterious persona,
generous in nature, beautiful and timeless. Annie is the most amazing
personality in pop music history."

Sandra
(USA) on Queen Sylvia of Sweden
"This woman gets things done!"

number of times!"
Mirjana
(Holland) on Meryl Streep
"I think she is the greatest actress of all!"
Paulo
(Brazil) on Natalie Wood

dramas and comedies."
Tammie
(USA) on Lucy Lawless
"Her acting abilities are limitless!"
Mac
(USA) on Joan Jett
"She rocks!"
Jeffrey
(USA) on Dorothy Dandridge
"How come no Dorothy or no Josephine Baker? These are true divas as
they overcame racism to become truly international stars and icons. Speaking
of which I saw 'Gentlemen Prefer Blonds' at the Egyptian last week. Marilyn
was truly diva-nymic. Glowing from the screen. Also, I think Diana Ross's diva
status is slipping with this whole faux supremes thing!"
Kristina
(Malaysia) on Madonna
"For being the bitch that she is!"
L.M.
(USA) on Natalie Wood
"I have been her fan ever since I saw her in this movie when I was 13.
She represents talent, and is a great role-model. She has true talent."
Aimée
(USA) on Céline Dion

confidence about herself you have got to love her style because she has that
all the way."
Melody
(USA) on Tallulah Bankhead
"She was so unforgettable!"
Lois
(USA) on Nina Simone
"Nina Simone is my favorite singer because she can express any emotion
that can be expressed regardless of what song she sings. I also like the way
she integrates politics into her music."
Jennifer
(USA) on Katherine Hepburn
"She was an interesting person as well as an interesting actress."
Jon
(USA) on Edith Piaf
"There are so many divas who are just divine: Barbra, Judy, Marlene,
Eartha, Dinah, Billie, Sarah Vaughan, etc. Edith Piaf, however, is my
favorite. Barbra Streisand is really tied with Edith for first place on
my list, but Barbra will always have more fans than Edith simply because she
[Barbra] is still working. Anyway, I don't know much French, but the great
thing about "The Sparrow" is that the actual language being sung
plays second fiddle to the raw emotions being expressed. Edith Piaf will
always be at the top of my list, and if you want to know why just listen to
"Hymne a l'Amour". Divine!"
John
(USA) on Donna Summer
"The voice ... oh what a voice!"
Michael
(USA) on Natalie Schafer
"Natalie Schafer had that upper west side society dame personality, the
beauty and elegance of a queen and had some of the best talent around! Natalie is a true diva. She could play everything from a high society
socialite to Mrs. Howell to a aging lesbian. Natalie Schafer had that special
class and elegance that only certain actresses had. She had true glamour and a
great sense of humor."
Kathleen
(USA) on Kathryn Grayson
"She is only the most forgotten diva of her time with the most beautiful,
perfect operatic voice and range, along with an angelic beauty that has been
overlooked far too long. Watch the movie 'Showboat' and see what I mean. It is
sad she was not included. Enjoyed the site and will continue to look for my
favorite diva of all time."
Helene
(Norway) on Edith Piaf
"She's the best!"
Bill
(USA) on Ruthie Henshall
"Cute, sexy and energetic."
David
(USA) on Natalie Cole
"... because Natalie never seems to follow a certain style. She has
created one that has spread throughout her career that is totally only hers.
She has excellent staying power she can go away and come back strong with
contemporary to the most haunting of melodies that have become classic!"
Peacham
(USA) on Ruthie Henshall
"Ruthie is the most dynamic and talented star working on Broadway or in
London today. She can act, sing and dance with grace and skill. A beauty with
a voice to cherish."
Sheri
(USA) on Madonna and Sarah McLachlan
"I couldn't pick just one. Of course, Madonna has been around longer, and
has done more for women and the world as a whole. Sarah has also done a lot in
her own ways. By starting Lilith Fair, and just being who she is, she has
single-handedly changed our view of women singers."
Aislann
(USA) on Fiona Apple
"Her voice is full of her soul and emotions. She has such conviction in
her voice, and she is so young. She has the potential to be the greatest."
Michael
(USA) on Dolores Gray

high society dame. She does it all, can sing it all and can crack anyone up.
Just watch her in The Opposite Sex or Designing Woman."
Chrissie
(Australia) on Sarah McLachlan
"She seems to be so full of heart and soul, and her music is so
beautiful." Chrissie

"She started it all." Gabriela
(Argentina) on Mina

(Argentina) on Mina
"She is an exceptional singer and a strong personality, a true artist.
She sang all the genres and in many languages with success. Her voice has
three octaves." Claudia

"... endurance, originality, style, sense of humor, fave of the 'Rat Pack'
and ... little known, sang the 'We Are Siamese' song in the movie 'The
Aristocats'!" Tami
(USA) on Shania Twain
"She is my favorite diva because she is so pretty and has a beautiful
voice. She does great music and has great concerts." Peter
(USA)
"Divas - The Site is a wonderful place to pay homage to some of the best
divas ever. Personal favorites include Karen Carpenter and Princess Diana. I
would love to see Sarah Brightman and Carole Lombard honored as well. Thanks!" Ciaron
(USA) on Madonna
"Ok, your site is amazing! Definitely the best diva site on the net and I
think I have seen them all. There is, however, just one thing wrong with
it ... Where is Madonna?!? I find it so hard to believe u would overlook the
diva of the "media explosion". I mean, you have Karen
Carpenter on here. Surely Madonna is more of a diva than her. Lol. Anyway,
thanks for making the site, I'm glad I found it." Peggy
(USA) on Natalie Cole
"Ms Cole is probably one of the most versatile female vocalists to ever
emerge. She has a wonderfully smooth silky voice when performing ballads and
love songs and she can blow it up with the best of them." Vlomond
(USA) on Natalie Cole
"Natalie created the modern diva persona. Her style, grace, and stage
presence has no equal. Every other diva can be measured standing next to her
awesome aura. She is the tallest female singer in the business and would never
be caught without her heels." Danielle
(Australia) on Céline Dion
"Just listen to the voice." Selina
(USA) on Natalie Cole
"... because she is elegance personified." Katrell
USA) on Natalie Cole

just cool! That's why!" Ben
(USA) on Madonna
"... 'cause she is just the ultimate diva. I mean just when you
thought she couldn't blow your mind, she off and changes again. That's why she
is my fav diva." Allen
(USA) on Natalie Cole
"She is music, beauty and class to the utmost." Joe
(USA) on Natalie Cole
"She's a songbird from God! Her voice is a divine instrument. Her
stylings are the most poignant today!" Red
(UK) on Céline Dion
"... because she's got the most beautiful and powerful voice in the world, and
also because she's glamorous." Carolyn
(USA) on Madonna
"... because Madonna is her own person. Nothing false about her. She's
beautiful ... inside and out." Keisha
(USA) on Natalie Cole
"... because she is sophistication personified!" Dee
(USA) on Natalie Cole
"She has a beautiful voice. Natalie Cole is music! She's also a
survivor! She shows one how to persevere. Natalie never ceases to amaze
me with her great songs and her diversity! She's a living legend!" Joe
(USA) on Natalie Cole
"I believe that Natalie Cole is definite my fav diva. She has so
much class despite some the tragedy's that she has had. But she has made it
through them all. Now celebrating her 25 years, she sounds better than the day
she first started. Natalie is one of very few singers that can take any
type or style of music and just sing the h--l out of it. I just love her
voice and her phrasing. She is absolutely the best diva." Orli
(Israel) on Marilyn Monroe
"She's cute. She's sweet." Elvin
(USA) on Mary J. Blige
"Mary is my favorite diva because she is imperfect. She doesn't have the
beauty of a supermodel. Nor does she have the perfect pitch of Whitney or
Mariah. What Mary has over other divas is the emotion and pain you feel and
hear in her voice. When you listen to her, it's like her voice creeps inside
and fills your heart, tugging at every bottled emotion." BJW
(USA) on Coretta Scott King
"The lady does what she does with style, grace and most of all class." BJW
(USA) on Cicely Tyson
"When I grow up, I want to be just like Cicely. I love her looks, her
style and grace." Andres
(USA) on Madonna
"She has influenced music in a way nobody even realizes. Her music is
very good and she has touched my life in a way no other person ever has." Julie
(Australia) on Madonna
"She rocks!" Andrew
(Germany) on Samantha Fox
"Samantha Fox is my favourite diva because she is the only singer, model
and actress that has the legendary foxy style." Peter
(USA) on Natalie Wood
"It was written in a book that for many Americans, Natalie Wood
exemplified the legendary movie actress who dwells in what the The New York
Times called 'the Hollywood of celluloid images, mansions and yachts, midnight
swims and motorcycle rides, celebrity parties and night life.' She was young,
beautiful, glamorous, gifted, wealthy, and ultimately, tragic. A true star and
diva!" Chris
(USA) on Donna Summer
"I grew up listening to this woman and she just has such a positive
force. She's beautiful and the energy she gives is magical. She's one of the
most underrated artists of our time and I think she deserves more credit and
respect than is given to her. Like the saying goes: There's divas and then
there is Donna Summer. Long live Donna Summer, long live the Queen!" Iclausell
(Spain) on Meryl Streep
"She is the best of all." Peter
(Belgium) on Tina Turner
"Although she is already in her 60's, she still amazes the world with her
energy during her live shows." Josette

hardest ..." Josette
(USA) on Ethel Merman
"She's the Top!" Anna
(USA) on Madonna
"She's simply the queen of pop! The ultimate woman!" Williams
(USA) on Tina Turner
"... because she's simply the best. She has overcome many obstacles
in the face of hard times. Her last record WD didn't sell very well in
the US in 1997, but she had the #7 highest gross concert in the US with more
than $24 million. She grossed even more in Europe. She held the Guinness Book
of Record for the largest paying audience for her concert in Rio. She held the
record for many years until only Paul McCartney broke it. She doesn't
have that many gold singles but more multi-platinum records check RIAA. Her
appearance along with others on VH-1 Divas '99 helped it to become the largest
rated cable show ever. Tina is just an entertaining, dynamic, awesome
performer. Plus unlike some female performers who cancel concerts or give
half-xxxxx performances Tina gives you your money worth. She performed more
than 250 shows in 1996-1997 and not a single show was cancelled. I am looking
forward to her "Twenty Four Seven Millennium 2000 Tour". Tina
Turner is the Best." Teresa
(USA) on Katherine Hepburn
"She has been in many movies that were top notch and has a wide variety
of characters that she plays. She has acted for many decades over the
years." Teresa
(USA) on CeCe Winans
"One of a kind voice, has a strong belief in God and can belt out any
song and make you feel good." Scot
(Australia) on CeCe Winans
"Pure talent!" Stephen
(USA) on CeCe Winans
"She has her own TV show, is a good gospel singer, had hits on the pop
chart with Whitney Houston and she has a killer voice." Pat
(USA) on Barbara Stanwyck
"Lovely. Good actress. Always got my eye. Just beautiful." Tony
(USA) on Donna Summer
"She is absolutely stunning, a voice from God, very multitalented,
artist, painter, actress, singer, writer, and probably one of the most under appreciated
artists since Marilyn Monroe." Jim
(Germany) on Natalie Wood
"One of the most talented movie stars! She is missed very much.
Remember her acting with James Dean that's Movie History of the best !" Asael
(Brazil) on Meryl Streep
"Her acting is perfect and she fully immerses in the characters she
performs." Adam
(UK) on Pamela Harriman
"From daughter of an English earl to American ambassador to France via a
marriage to Winston Churchill's son and the Agha Khan's bed - what could be
more divaesque?!!" Bob
(USA) on Whitney Houston
"Beautiful voice, elegant sense of style, regal, sophisticated look." Bob
(USA) on Pamela Harriman
"Stylish, elegant, smart." John
(Norway) on Golda Meir
"The others are lightweights." John
(Norway) on Tina Turner
"She is simply the best!" Nadia
(Belgium) on Emma Shapplin
"Gorgeous, classy,
Italian." Shirley
(USA) on Pamela Harriman
"As far as moving and
shaking, she was a woman in a man's world with a gift for hooking up with the
most powerful men. In the end she became a powerful entity herself." Shirley
(USA) on Josephine Baker
"One in a
million. There's never been anyone like her before or since. And
she had the most utterly beautiful body that I've ever seen." Shirley
(USA) on Marilyn Monroe
"I love your site, but
I can't imagine a diva list without Marilyn on it. She is as big or bigger now
than she was when she was alive. She had enough tragedy in her life to easily
qualify her and the fact that people feel strongly about her as you do by
listing her as a no-no, tells me she evokes a lot of feeling either for or
against. The enduring mystery of the most famous sex symbol in the world dying
alone also fits the criteria. I'd replace Julia Roberts with Marilyn..." Nick
(USA) on Tsarina Alexandra
"Probably the most
misunderstood woman of the twentieth century. But a looker in her day
... and a great mom." Paul
(USA) on Hedy Lamarr
"... best face that
ever was - more elegant than Liz T. and more sensual than Scarlet." Paul
(USA) on Edith Piaf
"I still remember
seeing and hearing her for the first time on The Ed Sullivan Show and then
going out the next day to find her record 'Milord'." Michael
(USA) on Lady Bird Johnson
"Lady Bird could do it
all. She was the rock behind LBJ, and managed to survive all triumphs.
She could spice it with an acid tongue or be the girl next door." Michael
(USA) on Rosalind Russell
"Roz could drop dead
hysterical or tear your heart with drama. But no matter what she did she
always had class." Joseph
(USA) on Céline Dion
"I just love her style,
beauty, songs and her beautiful attitude."
Grace
(Canada) on Tina Turner
"... because she's
great."
Ronn
(USA) on Ann-Margret
"She has the talent.
She has the smarts. She has the beauty."
Michael
(USA) on Ethel Merman
"Ethel is my fave
because she showed how talented she was, and didn't care what other people
thought. She had that classic beauty. A gracefully elegance and
show stopping talent. Ethel made it look easy. She could sing her heart
out and be ready in another ten minutes. She never quite became the
movie star, but her theater legend will live forever."
Antwon
(USA) on Natalie Cole
"Ms.Cole won ten Grammies in the nineties, sold thirty million records, made jazz hip, remains
the gown queen, has a college degree, released four Christmas albums, and is
regarded as the last of the great singers: Ella, Carmen, Billy, Sarah, and Ms.
Natalie Cole."
Leonardo
(Spain) on Mina
"She sings like the
angels should."
Frank
(Belgium) on Edith Piaf
"... marvelous voice
and she lived a very interesting life."
Andrea
(USA) on Josephine Baker
"Her
singing can make me cry - laugh all at the same time. She's the best."
Adam
(Scotland) on Katherine Hepburn
"Divas come in various
shapes and forms - but please let us not forget one of the most unusual goddesses
of our time - the inimitable Miss Katherine Hepburn. She completely
destroyed the myth that divas have to be outrageous and capricious
glamour pusses and promulgated a persona unsurpassed by none! Who else could
turn up to movie shoots on a bicycle wearing baggy khaki pants and a man's
shirt purloined by her director or co-star of the time at the height of her
fame and yet still project the mystique required by any or all of the standard
divas? Who shunned Hollywood as a home and escaped whenever possible to her
hideaway in her childhood home in New England? Who sustained one of the
longest illicit love affairs in moviedom history without ever marrying her
paramour and was never subjected to the scandal and ridicule normally
surrounding such liaisons? Who has maintained her simple mystique longer than
any other and still instills a sense of admiration and love in all who have
followed her long, long career despite eschewing cosmetic enhancement and
other undignified attempts at false longevity? Kate deserves more than most
her place in the Hall of Fame of Hollywood legends? Long may she reign as diva
supreme of her age!"
André
(Belgium) on Edith Piaf
"Just take a look at her
biography & stage performances and listen to her voice & music! Need I
say more?"
