"Phyllis Hyman was introduced to me during the final months of last year.
Before then I had never heard of anything she had ever sung before (or at
least that it was what I thought-- I had previously heard 'Living all alone,'
but did not know who the artist was). A friend of mine had told me about her
and her story was quite intriguing to me but it wasn't until I heard her voice
and the pain behind it that I wanted to know more. I didn't immediately
realize how this woman's voice and story were pulling me in until recently
when I caught myself talking about her to a friend that definitely did not
seem interested when she usually is. This baffled me because she usually
listens intently when I tell her about anything, so I asked her why she looked
annoyed and she told me she was fed up with hearing about Phyllis Hyman and
that I talked about her entirely too much. Everybody in this day and age (high
schoolers) aren't so much into the late 70's to early 90's era nowadays. The
power behind Phyllis Hyman's voice is untouchable. No one is capable of
touching my soul the way she is, I can just listen to her songs like 'Old
Friend', 'This Too Shall Pass', 'Was Yesterday Such A Long Time Ago', 'Why Not
Me' and just melt away in a time where there is no time. I do it all the time,
I can lay down and listen to her music and float away and lose my track of
time the next thing I know it's 12:00 am when I could've sworn it was 3 in the
afternoon. My goal in life is to get her story out to people like me who I
know would love to have the opportunity to hear and get to know the story of
this amazing woman, but can't because it's so hard to find her music and her
biography (her real story, the true Phyllis). Although I never got the opportunity
to see her in concert or meet her I feel like I am connected to her somehow. I
often question myself as to why and it all comes back to the music and her
voice even sometimes her lyrics. Sometimes it feels like she's singing songs
just for the situations that I've been through that is how much I connected to
her. One day I hope to create her movie to get her music out there. No one
should have to go to long before they hear this wonderful voice. Life blessed
us with the voice of an angel silenced but not for too long. Look out for my
movie y'all, and get ready to remember and learn. Much love to Phyllis Hyman,
Family and Friends for bringing out what little knowledge you could of
Phyllis's life and passing. Phyllis will always be my favorite because she was
real and special a true legend in music that will be cherished by me and
others forever."
